A MIDDLE-AGED man who died in a flat fire in Cliftonvile, near Margate, at the weekend has still not been identified.

Firefighters who were called to the first floor flat in Arundel Road at 8am on Saturday pulled the man out, but he was already dead. Other flats in the building were evacuated as crews tackled the fire for 45 minutes.

A post mortem was due to be held today but the death is not being treated as suspicious. Firefighters say there was a smoke alarm in the flat but it didn't have any batteries.
