Former Archbishop of Canterbury Lord Carey has urged Christians to reject the BNP.

The 74-year-old who retired from the post in 2002 made the comments in a Sunday paper following the appearance of BNP leader Nick Griffin on Question Time on Thursday night.

He told the News of the World he thinks Mr Griffin is a "squalid racist" and his claims to represent Christian Britain on the BBC programme were "chilling".

Lord Carey also argues having him on the show in the first place was a mistake.

He has called for Christians to stand shoulder-to-shoulder against the party, the views of which he calls "dangerous and evil". He also raises concerns about Mr Griffin hijacking Christianity and using it to support his policies.

The BBC is thought to have received several hundred complaints from viewers about Thursday night’s programme.
