EDWARD SIMMONS: convicted after a three-week trial

A 34-year-old man who bludgeoned his friend to death before dismembering his body with a chainsaw has been jailed for life.

Edward Simmons, from Bromley, murdered 36-year-old Alexander Brown, of Rectory Road, Beckenham, at his parents' bungalow, in Norfolk. He then dumped the dismembered body in a lake.

He showed no emotion in the dock as Deputy High Court Judge Sir John Blofeld recommended he serve a minimum of 18 years before being considered for release.

Simmons was convicted after a grisly three-week trial, at Norwich Crown Court.

Mr Brown's body was found at Pentney Lakes, near King's Lynn, in March.

He had been missing since October 23 last year, after a night out drinking with Simmons, in Swaffham.

Simmons carried out the killing in revenge as he believed Mr Brown had raped his girlfriend, the jury heard.
