Bogus builders trick elderly couple

HOUSEHOLDERS have been warned to be on their guard after two bogus builders tricked an elderly couple into paying for repairs to a chimney they themselves had damaged.

They called at the couple’s home in Sheldon Close, Aylesham, near Canterbury, on a "cold call" and explained they would be able to repair the chimney.

A while later one of the bogus builders drove the elderly woman to the Post Office in Aylesham where she withdrew cash and gave the men £200.

But Kent Police say it later became clear the men had not done any work and had broken the chimney themselves.

The men had a small, white van with red lettering on the side of the van "ROOFING" and two ladders on the roof.

One of the men is described as 5ft 10in to 6ft tall, white, aged about 26, of large build with dark, shortish cropped hair.

He was "quite handsome-looking," and polite with a local accent. He was wearing jeans, trainers and a sweater.

The second man is about 5ft 8in tall, of slim build, aged about 20, slightly shorter than other man and wearing jeans and trainers.

Anyone with information about this incident, which happened on January 17, is asked to contact Kent Police on 01304 240055. Alternatively phone Kent Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
