Bogus caller claims to be police officer

A CONMAN posing as a policeman is thought to be operating in a part of Kent.

A number of people in the Swale area have reported receiving phone calls from a man claiming to be a police officer and asking for money.

On Tuesday, a woman in Minster, on the Isle of Sheppey, was contacted by a man asking if she would donate money to a summer campaign Kent Police were planning to run.

When she asked for his phone number, he said he could not give it out, as it was a secure police line.

It is believed the same man has also contacted other people asking them for money to subscribe to a police magazine.

The man is thought to be in his late 20s.

Swale Borough Commander Chief Inspector Mark Chambers said: “Kent Police Officers would not request payment from members of the public over the phone in this manner. If you experience something similar, do not hand over any money and report the incident as soon as possible to Kent Police on 01622 690690.”
