AN INVESTIGATION by Kent Police is under way into criminal damage at a mosque and a violent attack on an Arabian student in the wake of the London terror bombings.

Officers were notified about 5.30pm last Thursday that words relating to the attacks had been scrawled on the mosque doors in Union Crescent, Margate, in black marker pen.

A police spokesman said: "Officers have gathered evidence from the scene to assist with their investigation and the words have been removed."

At about 11pm the same day, in Victoria Parade, Broadstairs, an 18-year-old student from the United Arab Emirates had his jaw broken when a teenage boy hurled a glass bottle at him, striking him in the face.

Another teenager made remarks to the victim about the bombings in London.

Thanet police area commander Supt Penny Martin has condemned the attacks.

She said: "This kind of behaviour is disgraceful and completely unacceptable. We are investigating these crimes and will endeavour to bring those responsible to justice.

"These attacks are mindless and only serve to make the current difficult situation even worse. We need to focus police resources on ensuring the safety of the whole community."

Supt Martin said officers had been in touch with community leaders to reassure them that the police were doing everything possible to catch those responsible and prevent further attacks.
