Boris Johnson has spent the night in intensive care after his coronavirus symptoms worsened.
The Prime Minister first began self-isolating a week ago on Friday after experiencing a mild fever.
Health secretary Matt Hancock and chief medical officer Chris Whitty also began a week of self-isolation for the same reason.
But while both the other men have since returned to public duty Mr Johnson, who has addressed the nation via video message and appeared on the doorstep of Downing Street to applaud the NHS, hasn't.
He was taken to hospital last night and reportedly underwent oxygen therapy but it has tonight been confirmed by Downing Street he is now in intensive care.
On Saturday Mr Johnson's pregnant fiancee Carrie Symonds also confirmed she had suffered minor symptoms but was now through the worst of it.
Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab, who is the PM's 'designated survivor', will take over running the country.
Former sports minister and MP for Chatham and Aylesford Tracey Crouch took to Twitter following the news breaking to offer her support.
She said: "Come on B, you got this. You can beat this. My love goes out to Carrie this evening."
South Thanet's Craig Mackinlay said: "The thoughts and prayers of the nation are with the @10DowningStreet @BorisJohnson for his soonest improvement & recovery."
Folkestone and Hythe MP Damian Collins added: "Stay strong Boris - you can get through this. Thinking of you and your family this evening."
Today the coronavirus death toll passed 5,000 with more than 50,000 confirmed cases.
