THE trial of four men accused of killing a man outside a bar has heard that a bouncer who was working there that night cannot remember what happened.

Mark Pottam had told police two days after the incident on May 7 last year that he had seen a group of men kicking 25-year-old Paul Baker “like a football” as he lay on the ground, the Old Bailey heard.

But last week Mr Pottam contacted police to tell them that he did not remember seeing any kicks or punches land on Mr Baker. The victim suffered a fatal injury when he cracked his head on the pavement in the alleged brawl outside The Lounge in Chislehurst.

Under cross examination, Mr Pottam said that he might have told police what he had heard other people saying rather then what he had actually seen. He said: “It was very confusing that night I can’t be 100 per cent sure.”

He added: “In relation to contact I can’t be sure if there was any.”

Mr Pottam, who was on medication for clinical depression at the time, said he saw a 4x4 vehicle leave the scene. In his statement to police he said he heard somebody say, “this is the last time that I’ll go out with you”.

Mr Baker grew up in Sidcup and lived in Chislehurst.

Chistopher and Oliver O’Bryan both of Half Moon Lane, Tonbridge, and Samuel Evans and Daniel Becks-Evans both of Leas Green, Chislehurst, deny manslaughter and violent disorder.

All four men deny kicking Mr Baker. The trial continues.
