Robert Noubine explains
what he did
A 12-year-old boy became a real life hero after rescuing his
disabled brother from a fire last night.
Robert Noubine sounded the alarm after discovering
flames at their home, a ground floor flat in Nursery
Close, Dartford, just after 10pm.
The fire started accidentally when a candle was left
burning and unattended in a bedroom.
Robert closed the internal door to prevent the fire spreading
and alerted his mother.
He then helped his mum wheel his disabled 22-year-old
brother Jean-Paul Midera safely out of the flat.
Mr Midera is paralysed down one side of his body and also
suffers from epilepsy.
He placed him in his shower chair and covered him in duvets
before moving him to the garden.
There were no injuries and now Dartford council are redecorating
the bedroom which was severely damaged by heat and smoke
damage.
He said: "My mum smelt burning and asked me to look at what it
could be and I just saw black smoke in her bedroom.
"My brother was in bed and my first thought was to help him and
my mum. I just did what I learned in school."
He asked neighbours to dial 999 and crews from Dartford fire
station attended within minutes.
His mother Josephine Noubine, 56, said: "He was fantastic, he is
my hero. It was the scariest experience in my life."
Firefighters praised the youngster's actions saying he saved his
family from a potentially 'disasterous situation'.
Dartford Crew Manager Kevin Ellliott
said: "This young boy played a huge part in assisting us, calmly
directing us to the exact location of the fire.
"Once the fire was extinguished he
continued translating for his mother who doesn’t speak much
English, helping us to arrange alternative accommodation for his
family.
"All of his steps were learnt
following a school fire safety visit and I cannot stress enough the
importance of encouraging all parents to spend a few minutes
talking to their children about what to do in the event of a
fire."
