A dramatic 90th-minute winner saw Gillingham suffer defeat in League 2 on Saturday.
The Gills appeared to be heading for a point until a free-kick was returned in the area and Steve Williams outjumped keeper Lance Cronin to nod home.
It was harsh on the Gills who had more than contained the hosts after Bradford dominated the early stages.
Shane Duff headed wide when he should have scored and makeshift striker Luke Oliver nodded over at the far post.
Gills got back into the game once they changed to a 4-3-3 formation with Danny Spiller and Jack Payne both going close.
Although McDonald headed wide early in the second half it was Bradford who looked more likely to score.
Louis Moult shot well wide before substitute Lee Hendrie fired straight at Cronin from the edge of the box.
Gills boss Andy Hessenthaler introduced Curtis Weston and Dennis Oli in a bid to find the winner but it was his final susbtitute, Stanley Aborah, who nearly won it, heading straight at the keeper with seven minutes left.
