Welling were dumped out of the FA Cup at the first attempt after fellow Blue Square South side Braintree Town ran out 2-0 winners at Cressing Road.
Sean Marks put the hosts ahead after 28 minutes, but Jamie Guy spurned a great opportunity to double their advantage soon after.
The second Braintree goal came from Guy himself from a penalty with 10 minutes remaining. Charlie Mitten pulled off a string of good saves, while Welling also had a penalty of their saved with the score at 1-0.

Warren McBean and Richard Butler netted in the second half after the Lillywhites fell 2-0 behind before the break.
Defender Aiden Palmer headed the hosts in front after 25 minutes from a Sanchez Ming corner. Striker Duane Jackman then doubled the advantage three minutes before half time, when he raced onto a long ball and poked home under an advancing Wes Foderingham.
McBean started the fightback on 57 minutes from the penalty spot. Nicky Greene was brought down in the area before McBean tucked his spot kick into the bottom corner. Butler then netted the equaliser on 74 minutes when he cut inside to fire a shot in off the post.
The two sides will meet again at Hayes Lane for the replay on Tuesday night.
