Welling United will go into the final day of the Blue Square Bet South season needing other results to go their way if they are to reach the play-offs.

On the back of a 1-1 home draw with Thurrock on Good Friday, champions Braintree partied in style against the Wings as they eased to a comfortable victory on Monday.

Two goals down in 23 minutes, Welling were outclassed by a Braintree team who proved a cut above anyone else they have faced this season.

Cliff Akurang twice pierced a threadbare Welling defence and it could have been more had it not been for a couple of fine saves by keeper John Whitehouse.

At the other end, Loick Pires failed to pick out team-mate Andy Pugh for a tap-in and Loui Fazackerley headed wide Jack Oberstellar's near-post corner.

Welling gave themselves hope with 16 minutes left when player/boss Jamie Day picked out Lee Clarke (pictured), who produced a neat finish.

But the Wings failed to seriously test keeper Nathan McDonald and Braintree added a third in stoppage time when Jai Reason scored from the penalty spot after a trip by Ben Martin.

Welling, who have now won just once in their last five games, need to beat Basingstoke this Saturday and hope that Ebbsfleet defeat Woking or Chelmsford fail to beat Hampton.
