A Celebration of Voices will fill the theatre at Margate Winter Gardens on Friday, July 25, as part of the town’s Big Sky festival.
It will feature the combined talents of Ian Shaw, Christine Tobin, Anita Wardell, Barb Jungr, and The Phil Robson Quartet.
Ian was named best jazz vocalist at the BBC Jazz Awards in 2004 and 2007 and his choice of material ranges from Joni Mitchell songs to standards and contemporary classics.
Christine’s expressive style is firmly rooted in a story-telling tradition that blends blues, folk and jazz; a territory occupied by such luminaries as Joni Mitchell, Cassandra Wilson and Nina Simone. Her seventh album – 'Secret Life of a Girl’ – described as 'sexy, gutsy, bluesy and beautiful’ by Lionel Shriver in The Guardian, has just been released.
Anita won the BBC Jazz Award in 2006, and is acclaimed for the unique artistry she brings to scat and be-bop singing and rave reviews from peers and critics alike have confirmed her reputation as one of Britain’s greatest vocalists. On her current album Kinda Blue, Anita has turned to the blues and its many connotations.
Barb commands one of the most hypnotically affecting voices in the business and always delivers absorbing, dramatic performances, drawing on sources as varied as Jacques Brel, Bob Dylan, Ray Davies and Elvis. She is accompanied by Jenny Carr at the piano.
Guitarist Phil Robson is internationally regarded as a versatile and creative musician. A co-founder (with saxophonist Julian Siegel) of the ground-breaking group Partisans, he is also a composer of note and leads Six Strings and the Beat – a project for guitar trio and string quartet which premiered at the Vortex Jazz Club in London in 2007.
The show, presented as part of the Margate Town Partnership events programme, starts at 8pm. Tickets are £16 from the venue box office, telephone 01843 229611.
