British Superbikes goes to the wire at Brands

SCOTT SMART: "I'm hoping for a top five or six result"

BRANDS Hatch hosts the final and deciding round of the British Superbike Championship this weekend.

Spaniard Gregorio Lavilla and Japanese racer Ryuichi Kiyonari are challenging for the title. Just 13 points separate the pair, with the European currently in the lead.

Kent rider Scott Smart will be hoping to muscle in on the action as he races on his home track.

Smart switched to Vivaldi Racing midway through the season. He also injured his collarbone, which hampered one of the title favourites.

Smart said: "The bike’s not as quick as some of the frontrunners, so I’m hoping for a top-five or six result. Obviously I started hoping to win the championship but it hasn’t worked out like that.

"I started with Suzuki and then went to another team, and then had a crash at Silverstone where I broke my collarbone."

With 50 points up for grabs during the weekend, the championship could go either way.

Smart added: "Who knows? Whatever happens, hopefully there’ll be tens of thousands of people to support them."
