Forget micro pigs - micro pears are the new must-have!

Measuring up at just the size of a large cherry, the diminutive
fruit has been grown at Brogdale Farm in Faversham.

And they are proving so popular a major retailer has snapped
them up!

Bosses at Marks & Spencer are selling them in major stores
throughout the country - including Bluewater.

But Brogdale Farm in Faversham is the first orchard in the UK to
grow Micro Pears or Bambinella, which are just 25 to 35mms wide -
the size of a large cherry.

Traditionally grown around the Mediterranean Sea, mostly
in Malta, the sweet-tasting fruit is one of 550 pear varieties
at the farm.

Tim Biddlecombe, managing director of the farm advisory services
team at Brogdale, said: "Customers have been used to conference
pears for many years and they don't realise that there's lots of
different varieties.

"It was an opportunity that Marks and Spencer's saw to introduce
an old variety but new to the UK market."

Worldwide Fruit in Whitstable distributed the small pears from
Brogdale to M&S - which hopes their size will convince
children to eat fruit.

M&S pear specialist Shazad Rehman said: "At M&S
supporting British growers is at the heart of our business."

He added: "These micro pears are as delicious as they are
eye-catching and will be a great way to easily convince you little
ones to eat fruit."
