A PRISONER on remand at Elmley Prison at Eastchurch on Sheppey has been found dead in his cell.

His body was discovered on Sunday. A Prison Service spokesman said Gary Hatton, 31, who had been on remand at the jail since last Friday accused of burglary, was found collapsed in his single cell.

Paramedics were called but were unable to resuscitate him.

A senior governor from another prison will conduct an investigation into his death. And inquest will be held.

The police and Mr Hatton’s next-of-kin have been informed of the tragedy.
