Police are appealing for information after a dog mauled a goat as it grazed in the Darland Banks Nature Reserve, Gillingham.

The incident happened between 1pm and 2pm on Sunday.

The goat, named Butter, was left with such horrific injuries after being attacked by the dark coloured Staffordshire bull terrier, that sadly he had to be put down. Police are now keen to trace the dog and its owner.

Investigating officer, PC Andy Whitall, said: "I would like to ask anyone who witnessed the incident, or has any information about the attack to come forward.

"We are keen to take the necessary steps to ensure that no other animals, or people, come to any harm.

"We understand that it is possible the Staffordshire bull terrier is a rescue dog.

"We are working closely with the RSPCA and the Kent Wildlife Trust in relation to this incident and would ask people to contact the police if they can help us locate the dog and its owner."

West Kent and Medway Warden for the Kent Wildlife Trust, Alison Ruyter added: "The goats at the reserve are cared for by local volunteers and this is a great setback for them.

"We are all greatly saddened by this event and the goats and cows who graze in the area have been left unsettled by the attack.’
