Many of Britain’s best known TV personalities meet a gruesome end in new movie Kill Keith. Chris Price quizzed kmfm’s Tony Blackburn about his on-screen demise.

Some people might say they would pay to see Tony Blackburn get electrocuted or watch Joe Pasquale kick the bucket.

Now they can, as new comedy horror film Kill Keith hits cinema screens, with a mission to exterminate TV personalities of the 1970s and 1980s.

A play on the title of the Quentin Tarantino film Kill Bill, starring Uma Thurman, the subject of this movie’s quest for annihilation is not David Carradine but Swap Shop legend Keith “Cheggers” Chegwin.

Yet rather than the cold-blooded revenge that is the subject of Tarantino’s modern classic, this is a tongue-in-cheek spoof of the revenge flick. The one thing the two films do have in common, though, is a tendency to be liberal on the gore.

“I have the most gruesome bit in it,” said kmfm DJ Tony Blackburn, who is among the celebrity cameos including comedian Joe Pasquale and TV astrologer and Strictly Come Dancing favourite Russell Grant.

Blackburn continued: “I like romantic comedies myself, but this is more for people who like Shaun of the Dead. I get electrocuted and it is quite something actually. I rather like the scene I did. It’s pretty gruesome but done in a funny way. It is not meant to be serious. It was just a bit of fun but it is certainly something people will remember. I’m very pleased with the way it came out.”

Billed as Saw meets Richard & Judy, the film welcomes audiences to the world of breakfast TV. Cliff and Dawn are the early-morning TV presenters on the nation’s favourite breakfast show, the Crack of Dawn. When Cliff decides to leave, the identity of the new host is kept a safely guarded secret. That is until the shortlist of Keith Chegwin, Tony Blackburn, Joe Pasquale and Russell Grant – all of whom play themselves – slowly becomes a deadlist.

The stars of the film are Family Affairs actor David Easter, 4.3.2.1 actress Susannah Fielding and Coming of Age actor Joe Tracini, who is Joe Pasquale’s real-life son.

Joe Pasquale, 50, who lives in Rochester, said: “It is a British horror comedy where somebody goes around killing daytime TV hosts. I had a lot of fun making it. I can play a bad version of me and swear a lot – I look a bit like Noddy with a headache.”

Shot at the legendary Pinewood Studios in Buckinghamshire, Blackburn spent three days filming his scene. It was Cheggers who asked him to take up the role – the pair have been friends for years. They used to present a children’s show together on Radio 1 on Saturday mornings and travelled the world doing competitions for GMTV. These days Tony presents the Tony Blackburn Show on kmfm every Sunday from 4pm until 7pm.

Blackburn, 68, said: “Keith rang me up out of the blue wondering if I would like a cameo. So far the film has gone down very well. Often you don’t know if something you are working on is going straight to DVD, but when I saw them making it I realised they were putting in a lot of effort. Originally it wasn’t meant to be a very expensive film but by the end I think they had spent quite a bit on it.”

Kill Keith (15), is released in cinemas on Friday, November 11.
