A TAXI driver was crushed to death when the vehicle he was working under collapsed on top of him.

A Kent Air Ambulance crew was called but 43-year-old Dave Ellott was pronounced dead before they arrived.

The tragedy happened on Tuesday in Sherwood Avenue, Walderslade, near Chatham. It is thought the jack buckled and the car plunged on to him.

Mr Ellott, a married father of three, ran his own business from his home fixing and fitting taxis with parts. When he wasn't fixing cars, the fully-qualified mechanic was driving taxis for the Star Taxi firm in Medway.

Inspectors from the Health and Safety Executive are investigating the tragedy.
