Video: the catalpa tree appeal

An appeal has been launched to try and save one of Kent's most iconic trees.

The catalpa tree in the old burial ground outside Rochester Cathedral needs urgent maintenance work.

New props are required to hold up its branches - and railings which are cutting into its boughs need replacing.

It is estimated the work will cost £22,000 pounds.

Medway Councillor Susan Haydock says the tree is a historic natural landmark:

"We estimate the tree to be around 140 years old and I would venture to add that it is the oldest catalpa tree, probably, in England.

"She is a grand old lady and she is now in need of some tender loving care."

Donations can be made via the appeal website.
