A 20-year-old man who is in a coma in Mexico is showing signs of improvement – thanks to donations of his rare type O-negative blood.

Philip Pain has been in a critical condition in Sharp hospital in Mazatlan after falling seven floors from his hotel balcony.

On Wednesday, his family said his heart and lungs are improving and that he has begun to receive food via a tube.

The 12 pints of O-Negative blood that arrived from Florida on Tuesday helped Philip a lot. He was in surgery on Monday, in an attempt to facilitate a better blood supply to his leg.

A facebook campaign by his brother and sister, Lawrence and Stephanie, has led to many people in both the UK and Mexico offering to donate.

According to his sister, he was strong enough for kidney dialysis on Monday night due to donations of his rare blood.

Updating the group on Tuesday night, Stephanie said she was grateful to those in the Mazatlan area who had already donated blood to her brother.

She wrote: "I want to be cautious but I think it is pretty safe to say there is enough blood to last him the next couple of days.

"Obviously, if the situation changes it would make things so much easier if the hospital had a list of donors they could call in an emergency. And he will need more blood towards the end of the week so good to keep spreading the word."

Philip was strong enough for kidney dialysis on Monday night due to previous donations of his rare blood. But more type O-negative blood is needed.

Stephanie added: "Phil will be there for at least a week and we have learnt he needs more blood to last the rest of the week."

The family is grateful to those who have offered to donate from the UK and other parts of Mexico, but at the moment are appealing to those in the Mazatlan area.

If you know someone in the Mazatlan area with type-O Negative blood ask them to contact the Sharp Hospital in Mazatlan on 66998656(78-84).

Philip was in Mexico as part of a year abroad in his course at the University of Southampton.

Speaking yesterday, Philip's brother, Lawrence said: "The blood type is rare in the UK, but in the UK we have blood banks. They don't have that type of system in Mexico; people are expected to get it themselves."

"If you have any relatives or friends in Mexico who are O Negative please get in touch. Phil really is in desperate need of some, it really is so rare, and he really does need it. If you do know anyone please ask them to get in contact with the Sharp Hospital in Mazatlan."
