Three of Medway’s historic buildings could be used as museums.

The council is considering using the castles at Upnor and Rochester, together with Eastgate House.

The idea is one of several suggestions put forward to councillors on Thursday by Simon Curtis, the council’s tourism chief.

At the moment, all the council’s memorabilia is kept at the Guildhall Museum, Rochester, or in storage.

Mr Curtis is proposing the council should adopt a policy of selling some of its collection. The money would then be used to pay for improving the museums.

In the 1950s, both Gillingham and Gravesend councils closed their museums and sold off their collections to the highest bidders. Mr Curtis told the committee: “The museum will not undertake disposal of items motivated by financial reasons.”
