Police officers clear debris following Saturday morning's accident in Beaconsfield Road, Canterbury.

A man remains in a critical but stable condition the day after he was airlifted from the scene of a serious road accident in Canterbury.

Police are investigating the collision on Beaconsfield Road, between a scooter rider and a Nissan Micra car on Saturday morning.

The scooter rider, a local man in his early 50s, sustained serious leg and arm injuries in the accident just after 9am. He was flown to King's Hospital by the Kent Air Ambulance shortly after 11am.

The driver of the Nissan, a local woman in her 20s, was not hurt.

Officers from the serious collision investigation unit closed the road in both directions between St Stephen's Hill and Forty Acres Road until around 1pm.

Ian Johnson, who lives in St Radigunds Place, was cycling to see a friend in Forty Acres Road when he saw the air ambulance coming into land.

He said: "It must have been around 10am and the ambulance hovered over the city centre for a while before it came into land on The Beverlie field.

"Nobody was allowed to walk or cycle through there until it left about an hour later."

Police are now appealing for any witnesses to come forward. They should contact PC Matt Jackson on 07870 252245.
