POLICE have released CCTV images of a man they want to speak to in connection with a serious sexual assault in a Kent town.

The man - who police believe to be a key witness - was pictured at Chatham railway station on the same day as the alleged attack, Saturday, August 25.

Police say the man in the pictures is known to have spent the early part of that afternoon with the 27-year-old female victim in Chatham High Street.

She was attacked in Victoria Gardens later between 6pm and 8pm.

Det Insp Mel Brooks, who is leading the investigation, said: "I would like to stress that this man is not a suspect but is a key witness who may have important information.

"The CCTV images were captured at 2.30pm. We understand that the pair did not board a train and at some stage they walked to Victoria Gardens where they separated. After this the assault occurred.

"I ask anyone who was in the Victoria Gardens area at the time of the incident to contact me, regardless of if they feel they have information for us.

"Something that may have seemed perfectly innocent to them may be that crucial piece of the puzzle that we need."

Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 01634 792490 or Kent Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555111.
