STAFF at Bedgebury Pinetum near Goudhurst are appealing for sponsors to help their ambitious plans to enlarge and improve the famous Forestry Commission park.

The pinetum is home to many species of endangered pines from across the world and also offers a valuable habitat to local wildlife.

A registered charity - the Friends of Bedgebury - has been established with the aim of raising £3m to provide the pinetum with a new education and research centre.

It has won a grant of £1m from the Heritage Lottery Fund and is now seeking other "green sponsors" in order to complete the task in time for the pinetum's 80th anniversary in 2004.

The construction of the new centre will embrace green technology by using accredited sustainable British timber and renewable energy systems.

Alan Titchmarsh, patron of the Friends of Bedgebury, said: "The pinetum provides a unique conservation site in a setting which allows visitors to really enjoy the beauty and value of trees.

"The visitor and education centre will encourage more people to come and discover for themselves this countryside treasure."

Sponsors large and small are being sought. Donors will be recognised for their involvement and are invited to take up sponsorship opportunities designed to provide a chance to partner nature.

The plans include the creation of a new lake to form a focal point and encourage wildlife, complete with a viewing platform for visitors.
