PEOPLE living on Sheppey are being urged to sign up for their one opportunity to set foot on the new Swale Crossing.
A charity walk, which is being organised by Sheppey Round Table, is the only chance for people to walk across the multi-million pound high-level bridge.
It is due to be held in May, before the crossing opens this summer.
A new website is being set up for those wishing to register and find out more information.
Graham Friel, general manager of Sheppey Route Ltd, said: “Pedestrians and cyclists will not be permitted to use the new high-level crossing once it is open.
“So this event provides the local community with a unique opportunity to cross the new bridge on foot and see the surrounding area from this vantage point.”
Sheppey Round Table, which has more than 40 years experience in event management and fund-raising, is working with the construction team to finalise the last few details.
Secretary Tony Potter said: “We see this as an ideal opportunity to demonstrate the role of the Round Table.
“With the organisations that have already expressed an interest, this event gives us the opportunity to make a significant impact in the local community.”
Julian Goffin, press officer, said: “Isle of Sheppey Round Table members have expertise in a wide number of areas to undertake the great deal of organisation that must go into an event of this size.
“We will be looking for local businesses and organisations to support us and are currently developing a website (www.bridgewalk.co.uk) as just one of the ways those interested in the joining the walk can get more information.”
The walk is being supported by MP Derek Wyatt, the Highways Agency, Sheppey Route Ltd and Carillion.
