A second half debut goal from substitute Joe Anyinsah saw Charlton notch up their third win of the season.
Anyinsah, who signed for the Addicks on a free transfer last month, was brought on in the 76th minute for Paul Benson.
It took him just nine minutes to make his mark, latching onto Therry Racon's pass to drive the ball past Notts County keeper Stuart Nelson.
However, Charlton could easily have conceded twice. The referee awarded a penalty after Matt Fry brought down Ben Davies in the area but Lee Hughes saw his 75th-minute spot kick saved by Charlton's Rob Elliot.
Hughes had earlier missed a golden chance to put his side 1-0 up when he slid in ahead of team-mate Kevin Smith, only to miss spectacularly from just two yards out.
