Manager Chris Powell was satisfied as Charlton came from behind to snatch a point at home to League 1 promotion-chasers Southampton on Tuesday night to stop the rot and move the Addicks back into the top-half of the table.

Bradley Wright-Phillips’ goal four minutes from time ended a run of three straight defeats for Powell’s side, though they are winless in their past nine games.

Powell said: "We haven’t had much luck. In a number of games we’ve let ourselves down. We’ve had a bit of soul searching and I just wanted a performance that showed we cared."

"It’s been lacking in certain areas, but to a man, against a top team, we stood up to the challenge. We got our just rewards."

Jose Fonte came closest to giving the Saints the lead before the break, seeing a header cleared off the line and the visitors eventually took the lead when Radhi Jaidi crashed in a corner from Guly do Prado shortly after the hour mark.

Miguel Llera (pictured) hit the underside of the crossbar soon after as the hosts pushed for a leveller, though the officials correctly ruled the ball did not cross the line before bouncing out.

However, Charlton grabbed a point when Spurs-loanee Dean Parrett dinked a pass into the path of Wright-Phillips to poke home his sixth goal for the Addicks, and just their second goal in four games.

Dany N’Guessan found the net in the dying moments but saw his strike ruled out for offside.
