A 55-year-old Chatham man has been sent to prison after failing to pay his council tax for nearly 10 years.

Medway magistrates sentenced Philip Martin, of Yarrow Road, to 40 days imprisonment on July 28 after he failed to attend court to settle his bill of £3,141.27.

A warrant was issued for his arrest, which was served on Monday August 4 by bailiffs acting on behalf of Medway Council. He has now been taken to Elmley prison on the Isle of Sheppey to serve his sentence.

Martin’s council tax bill dates back to 1999. Despite three previous court appearances and repayment plans, Martin failed to keep up his payments.

Medway Council’s finance portfolio holder Cllr Alan Jarrett, said: “This prosecution sends a clear message to everyone that Medway Council will not tolerate council tax evasion.

“Tax payers’ money funds vital services that benefit the community.

"It is completely unacceptable for someone not to contribute to the funding of Medway and we won't hesitate to investigate, track down and prosecute those who cheat the system.

“I would like to pay tribute to the council’s investigation and legal teams who works tirelessly to make sure tax evaders are brought to court.”
