Welling moved into the top three of Blue Square Bet South on Saturday with a 2-0 win at play-off rivals Chelmsford.

A dull game, which saw both teams fail to create many chances was effectively decided by the pace of Wings forward Luis Cumbers, pictured.

Welling started brightly and won three corners in the opening moments but Chelmsford quickly responded with a couple of corners of their own.

The Wings lost defender Ben Martin to a groin injury as early as the 13th minute with Graeme Andrews making a welcome return from the substitutes bench.

Cumbers was set clear in the 37th minute and he crossed for Loick Pires to tuck home from close range, an opportunity he would have done well to miss.

Andy Sambrook was replaced by the fit-again Jamie Coyle at half-time but chances were few and far between with the pitch and the running track combining to stop any flow in the game.

Welling successfully ran the clock down and were rewarded with a second goal in the third minute of stoppage time when Cumbers chased a backpass and gleefully scored into an open net after keeper Carl Pentney missed his clearance.

The Wings host Eastleigh at Park View Road on Tuesday before travelling to Woking next Saturday.

Bromley fell to 10th after a 2-1 home defeat to struggling Hampton & Richmond at Hayes Lane on Saturday lunchtime.

The hosts fell behind shortly before the hour when Dave Tarpey opened the scoring with a fine individual goal while the second arrived nine minutes from time when James Simmonds’ cross-shot found the corner.

Jerry Nnamni pulled one back from Harry Harding’s free-kick in stoppage time but the hosts could not find a leveller and have now lost seven of their last nine games, taking just two points.
