A child is recovering after being rescued from a house fire.

Fire crews, from Rainham, Chatham and a specialist height vehicle from Medway were called to Thompson Close, Rainham, shortly after 8.30am on Tuesday to tackle a blaze in the loft space of a two-floor property.

Fire fighters calmed the flames from outside until the height vehicle could be brought in to remove roof tiles and give access to the loft.

A boy suffering from minor burns was treated by fire fighters before being taken to Medway Maritime Hospital.

It took the crews more than an hour to extinguish the blaze and they left shortly before 11am.

A fire investigation officer has been sent to the scene.

A spokesman for Kent Fire and Rescue said: "The fire was well alight by the time our crews got there. It was evident it was coming from the loft space. They started to remove tiles tiles using the height vehicle and attacked the fire. One male child was taken by ambulance to hospital suffering from minor burns, but our crews had already given him some treatment at the scene."
