BURGLARS have targeted a Kent charity shop and made off with a collection tin and the day’s takings.

The Children’s Trust shop in the High Street, Chatham, was broken into between the end of business last Saturday and 8.45am on Monday.

The thieves made off with £252 from Saturday’s takings and took the full collection tin.

A nail and hair salon next door was also broken into over the weekend.

Charity shop managers Lorraine Picozzi and Christine Kressinger say they will now have to spend charity money on replacing the forced backdoor and upgrading security.

Christine said: “The people who do this sort of thing are the lowest of the low.”

Lorraine added: “We are a charity – how can anyone steal from such a worthy cause?

“We have a lot of people who come in and support the Children’s Trust. One man comes in on a weekly basis and always puts £5 in the collection box.”

Sgt Alex Bain, of Medway Police, added: “To steal from a charity is both heartless and despicable and we are keen to hear from anyone who may be able to help us identify who is responsible for this crime.”
