Clear view on screen damage

DRIVERS who do not pay attention to the condition of their windscreen are putting their safety at risk.

This is the message from RAC Auto Windscreens, as it launches a campaign to make drivers aware of the dangers of a chipped windscreen.

The company believes a high percentage of UK vehicles could have chipped or cracked windscreens which should be repaired to maintain perfect road vision.

Managing director at RAC Auto Windscreens, Bill Duffy, said: “In many instances the windscreen is the poor relation when it comes to care and maintenance.”

If left unrepaired, chips and cracks can create serious driving hazards. In strong sunlight, or with glare of oncoming traffic, light refraction can potentially obscure a driver’s vision.

Some cracks risk spreading, causing more damage to the screen.

A chipped windscreen can also be illegal. In an MOT test, if there is any damage to a windscreen, the driver’s view will be checked and any crack or chip larger than 40mm wide will result in a failed test.

Duffy said: “Most drivers put up with what they consider to be minor chips or cracks on their windscreen because they believe that the only alternative is a costly replacement. However, nine out of 10 stone chips can be repaired by means of resin injections and most insurance companies will pay the full cost of the repair for fully comprehensive policy holders. The repair only takes around 30 minutes from start to finish and brings the glass back to its original strength.”
