Climate Camp protesters have called time on their attempt to shut down Kingsnorth Power Station.

The three pronged ambush was part of a Day of Mass Action organised by eco-activists angry at proposals, by energy giant E.ON, to build a new coal plant at Hoo, the first in 30 years.

Kent Police say 50 people were arrested and 123 people involved in the raft regatta either rescued or taken off the river. One was swimming at the time.

The protest began shortly after 8am Saturday when rafts set out from Riverside Country Park, Rainham, heading for a jetty on the other side of the River Medway.

They made it about 200 metres before police launches intercepted seizing, campers claim, their safety boat.

Rafters were escorted to a jetty at Upnor.

Thirty-nine craft took part in this part of the Kingsnorth assault - including 21 rafts, nine inflatables and nine canoes.

Three protesters meanwhile scaled a electricity pylon linked to the power plant to unfurl a Shut Kingsnorth banner. Others succeeeded where Napolean failed and invaded Fort Hoo.

Police wearing riot gear later moved in to stop protesters trying to clamber over perimeter fencing surrounding Kingsnorth Power Station.

More than 100 protesters used metal railings in a bid to break into Kingsnorth Power Station. Four protesters who got over the normally electrified inner fence were arrested.

The group of eco-activists started making their assault at around 11am ignoring police safety warnings about entering the site.

The supply to the inner fence was switched off by E.ON as a precaution. At about 11.40am a police helicopter flew overhead warning protesters that police with batons and dogs would be sent in if they failed to disperse.

Moments later scuffles broke out between protesters and a group of about 12 officers. At least one person was hurt after being hit as police removed a ramp used by people scaling the outer perimeter fence.

Police then stood guard at this section, close to the River Medway, from attack.

More than 1,000 people had arrived at noon for a rally, three hours after leaving the Climate Camp site at Deangate Ridge in a colourful carnival style procession.

At the gates the Camp's Christian Cafe crew held a service giving the power station its last rites.

The day of action effectively ended when police moved in to remove eco-diehards holding a sit-down protest outside the gates of Kingsnorth Power Station.

Around 20 had refused to budge, with a further group of 30-40 cheering them on.

Police moved in at around 2.45pm picking up protester one at a time and taking them away in waiting security vans.

Twenty-six forces from around the UK were involved in policing the camp with around 1,500 officers on duty or on standby during the 12-day protest.

Protesters had talked for months of plans to attack the power station by land, air and water, including a raft regatta and an aerial assault.
