Climate Camp protesters appear in court

Seven people who took part in the Climate Camp protest at Hoo appeared in court on Monday.

The seven were among a group of 29 who occupied and partially emptied a coal train on its way to Drax power station in June, appeared before magistrates at Selby in Yorkshire.

The other 21 - one person was absent - also appeared in court.

The seven came to Medway saying they intended to break their bail conditions, which prevented them from going near Hoo peninsula.

Six of the Medway group have yet to face any charges in relation to breaking tgheir bail conditions.

The magistrate invited the 28 to give an indication of their pleas, but said the case was so serious it would have to be dealt with at Crown Court.

Many of the defendants indicated they intended to plead not guilty. The committal hearing will be on October 7 in York.

Bail conditions banning defendants from entering the Hoo peninsula - aimed at preventing their participation in the Camp for Climate Action - were dropped, as were the extra bail conditions placed on Paul Morozzo, 41, imprisoned for breaking these bail conditions.

Mr Morozzo was the seventh member of the Medeway group.

He was arrested at the gates of the camp in Dux Court Road on Monday, August 4.
