When damage was caused to the toilets of a petrol station in Dover, police had no shortage of suspects - 50 to be precise.

The Belgian football fans were on their way to the Champions’ League fixture at Arsenal, and were among 1,400 supporters, on 28 coaches, who travelled through the port to go to the match.

One coach broke down at the petrol station, opposite the Western Docks, and it was discovered that the words Standard Liege had been daubed on the walls of the toilets.

“Although we had 50 suspects the actual damage could not be attributed to any one person,” said Port of Dover police chief officer Steve Masters.

“So it was arranged for all of the occupants of the coach to pitch-in and remove the graffiti to the satisfaction of the duty manager before the coach was allowed to proceed.”
