NEARLY 60 people turned up for the public meeting to discuss crime and disorder in Cheriton, near Folkestone.
The event, at St Andrew's Methodist Church Hall, was organised by Shepway Liberal Democrat spokesman Peter Carroll and councillor colleague Linda Cufley after they received a number of letters about the troubles in that part of the district.
Residents say problems include assaults, bogus callers, vandalism, drug users, burglary, theft and anti social behaviour.
Mr Carroll said: "These concerns were echoed throughout the meeting with similar stories.
It was clear the community in Cheriton does not feel policed. I will be writing to the Chief Constable."
Suggestions which were made include the introduction of alley gates to all back passages across the area preventing criminals from using them as hiding places or escape routes. Other problems such as litter are being passed on to Shepway District Council.
Police Insp Paul Ludwig wrote to the organisers before the meeting stating he was is happy to meet with them to discuss any issues raised. South East Kent police told the Kentish Express figures show crime in Cheriton is down 12.5 per cent on this time last year.
