Contractors unearth mortar bomb

A BOMB disposal squad was called to a caravan park on Sheppey after a mortar bomb was dug up. It was unearthed at Nutts Farm Caravan Park, Shellness Road, Leysdown, by contractors installing a new electric and water supply.

Police closed the main road while a bomb disposal team from Kent police headquarters attended the scene. The mortar bomb was 14 inches long and three inches in diameter.

It was soon discovered that it was no longer live and had previously been detonated.

Philip Butcher, who runs Nutts Farm with his brother Michael, said: "We didn't know whether it was still live or not. There have been so many of these things found down here, particularly when the site was developed in the late 1980s."

The caravan park was unoccupied, so it was not necessary to evacuate.
