Council confirms third academy plan

A third academy is to be introduced in Medway.

New Brompton College will become one providing a sponsor, parents and the council agrees.

Plans are to go to the Medway Cabinet on January 27 to start consultations on the process.

Head teacher Judy Rider said it was “a celebration story”.

She said: “It is a natural extension of what has been happening at the school. We want it.

“If it goes ahead it will bring unbelievable resources into the area.”

There have been no celebrations with the creation of the first two academies in Medway.

The Chatham academy was officially approved by the Cabinet on Tuesday afternoon. It will merge Medway Community College and Chatham South school.

The first academy - merging Temple and Chapter schools at Strood - was surrounded in acrimony.

But Ms Rider said: “Our journey started about 18 months ago with the visit of the children’s minister, Ed Balls.”

The school had a troubled history.

It has changed its name several times since the days when Upbury Manor school took in students from the failing Woodlands Secondary school.

Under its present head teacher, exam results have improved. Once the worst in the country (in 2005), in 2007 students recorded 20 per cent getting five or more GCSE A-Cs.

The 2008 figures have been delayed for all schools following the national exams fiasco in the summer.
