Council sell-off plans

People will be able to have their say over the possible sale of more than a dozen prime sites in Thanet.

The district council is reviewing all its buildings to see how cost effective, well maintained and how beneficial to local residents they are.

Sixteen properties in Margate, Cliftonville, Ramsgate, Broadstairs and Westbrook could be sold off with the proceeds re-invested into building new facilities.

Cllr Roger Latchford, cabinet member for culture and economy, said: “We are required by the Government to look at all our assets, and to use the money from any that we sell off, in order to improve facilities for our residents.

“The money we receive from those sales can then be put towards the things that matter most to local people, such as a new swimming pool,”

The council has said how each site should be redeveloped, with some earmarked for residential or commercial use, although it is keen to retain or expand green spaces.

Residents will be able to have their say on the proposals at a series of public meetings throughout May.
