A FORMER councillor will not be prosecuted following allegations of sexual offences, Kent Police have announced.

Paul Foster, 49, a former Conservative member for Rainham Central Ward on Medway council, was arrested in October last year. He resigned from the council on December 28. His spokesman said at the time that his resignation had nothing to do with the police investigation.

A Kent Police spokesman said the Crown Prosecution Service had decided there would be no prosecution.

The spokesman added: "Utmost care and sensitivity was taken over the investigation and the time taken to review the case indicates that the concerns were taken extremely seriously.

"There was close consultation by the CPS with Kent Police throughout the investigation and review process.

"A wide range of evidence was considered thoroughly at the most senior level. In order to prosecute there must be sufficient evidence for a realistic prospect of conviction, and if the evidence is insufficient, whatever the nature of allegations, the case cannot go ahead."

Police arrested Mr Foster on his return from holiday in Europe on October 19 last year. Details of the investigation have never been made public.
