Councillors at Kent's busiest traffic junction fear transport chiefs have no plans in place to keep traffic moving during the London Olympics.

Dartford joint transport board complained there had been no answers from Kent County Council highways bosses since 2008. This was despite the fact that motorway traffic from the ports and M25 converge at the Dartford Crossing.

Upto 300,000 vehicles a day are expected to use the crossing, notorious for its long queues at the tolls.

One suggestion from politicians is that the tolls should be lifted, but board members said last night there would continue to be congestion as long as the tollbooths remained in place.

Cllr Avtar Sandhu (Con) said: "Dartford is going to become absolutely gridlocked. I want the highways staff to release it.

"It will be an absolute disaster if we can't get the traffic through."

A Dartford council director, Chris Oliver, said repeated requests had been met with repeated apologies.

The most recent information was that KCC "did not have the resources to produce a report" for last night's meeting.

The Messenger requested to speak with a KCC official this morning but was told to put questions in writing.
