The county’s first ever Beaver colony is at risk of closing if more adults don’t come forward to help run it.

New Romney Beavers - started 25 years ago - will have to close in December if it cannot recruit more adult leaders.

The group has 25 children aged between six and eight and another 10 on a waiting list.

District Scout Commissioner and Beaver Leader Janet Thomas said: “I would hate to see the colony close. The children are such a joy to work with. They have so much fun and enjoy learning, the activities and outings, but if we are unable to recruit more leaders we will have to close on December 19.

“I am more than willing to continue, but we recently lost adult leaders Adrian Higgs and Angie Alexander who have both gone into further education.

“Angie’s 14-year-old daughters Olivia and Linzie with 16-year-old Explorer Scout Alex Andrews are helping us.

“Leaders must be 20, with no maximum age limit, need a sense of humour and be willing to enjoy a laugh. They will receive training.

“In the last year ours was first the Beaver Colony to achieve the Kent Invicta Challenge. Our Beavers have achieved badge and we are now working on our air activities badge, which includes a visit to Brenzett Aeronautical Museum.”
