Police spokesman Sally Farrell said the man, who was cut free from a Nissan Primera after the accident on the Sheppey side of the A249 on August 5, had been on a ventilator in intensive care. He was now breathing on his own and had been moved to another ward at Medway Maritime Hospital.
The other driver, a Sheerness man who had been at the wheel of a Vauxhall Combo van, suffered chest and back injuries but was discharged from hospital after treatment.
