Andy Hessenthaler was delighted to take a point off Crewe on Saturday.

The Gills ended a four-game winning streak for Crewe on home soil after Curtis Weston levelled the scores early in the second half.

That goal cancelled out a first half own goal by defender Tony Sinclair.

Hessenthaler said: "I thought it was a good performance and I'm delighted with the point.

"Their home record is pretty good. We played midweek and put a lot of effort into the win against Rotherham and they didn't play.

"We did look a bit tired towards the end and they were popping the ball around a bit, which they are good at."

Hessenthaler was frustrated to see his side waste good possession in the first half but was grateful that Weston tried his luck from distance.

He said: "We started the first half very well but my only gripe was that we didn't show enough quality in the final third. We were shooting at times when we shouldn't have.

"Curtis picked the ball up, drove forward into space and it was a fantastic strike. He has that in his locker."

Sinclair, playing for the first time in around three months, turned the ball into his own net in the first half but Hessenthaler was pleased with his performance overall.

Hessenthaler said: "The goal was unfortunate, as it took a nick off their lad's head and he's gone to clear it, but it's hit his shin and gone in.

"It happens in games and it's just unfortunate for him but I thought he was fantastic in the second half."

Sinclair was only playing after he replaced Simon King with just 17 minutes gone.

King was making his first start since recovering from injury but limped off with a hamstring strain.

"I'm devastated for him because it was great to see him out there," added the Gills boss.
