Firefighters from across Medway spent last night tackling a large barn fire on the Isle of Grain.

Crews were called out at about shortly after 10pm to the barn on farmland in West Lane, where they found the building well alight.

The barn, which was being used to store hundreds of bales of hay and straw, has been destroyed by the blaze, which could be seen from some miles away.

At its height, about 30 firefighters were needed to tackle the blaze, which is still smoldering at about 8am the next morning.

Crews from Strood, Grain, Hoo, Medway along with extra support from Thames-side and Larkfield spent hours bringing the fire under control.

An incident support unit was also sent to the scene as the roof of the building, was made of asbestos.

The barn, which was about 90ft by 90ft, is right next to another building which was used to store gas cylinders and oil drums.

However, crews kept spraying water on this building to stop the flames spreading to it.

A spokesman for Kent Fire and Rescue Service, said: "One crew were still there at about 8.30am damping down.

"The barn and its contents have been completely destroyed, we would see the smoke from the fire as we went to the scene, there was a lot of smoke.

"People living in the area are advised to keep their windows and doors shut for a while as a precaution."
