AFTER a triumphant hometown launch of their latest EP at the Tunbridge Wells Forum, Cyrano are eager to cut their teeth on the national music scene.
Receiving airplay from Radio 1’s Unsigned acts website and on London’s XFM has boosted their morale further in their quest for rock recognition.
"The launch was one of the best gigs we have done," said their frontman Joe Ackerley, who helped put the band together three years ago.
"The place was packed out with about 200 people in there. We hadn’t played there for quite a while and wanted to put on a night with a few other bands, which worked really well."
As he admitted, the band of close friends may not be natural extroverts, but on stage they feel as if they are in their element.
Their name stems from Cyrano De Bergerac’s brooding French literature which aired repressed feelings- which he hoped their music also achieved.
So far so good, as they have taken on many venues in the capital including The Camden Underworld and The Borderline, with the likes of Radiohead having graced the latter.
"We have mainly been doing gigs in London as there are not many places to play in Kent, though it has been good living near the Forum.
"We’ve also got a regular slot at the Crypt in Hastings which is a good venue."
Joe, 25, was largely inspired to take up guitar from his mother. She had played folk music in the 1960s explained that he had learnt much from her as a youngster and formed a band while he was at school.
In upbeat form, he believed their sound is now tighter than ever and warrants serious attention after several near misses with record companies.
He’s keen to point out their songwriting is a combined effort with fellow bandmates, Tim Hubbard, Karl Barton and Matt Wilson.
Being in the studio has been a rewarding experience, but nothing compares to getting out on the road.
"It’s the ultimate high being on stage, it’s what we all love doing and hope we can do it full time. We don’t really care about the jobs we’re doing, it’s the music we love."
