Former F1 world champion Damon Hill is making his comeback to
the starting grid at Brands Hatch after a pit stop of 13
years.

Damon, 51, who is now pundit on Sky’s F1 channel, is coming out of
retirement to race in the DTM-supporting Volkswagen Scirocco R-Cup
race.

He is reuniting with a host of his driving friends – dubbed the
‘Rat Pack’ - including Mark Blundell, Perry McCarthy, Julian Bailey
and Martin Donnelly.

In the 1980s they all rose through the ranks to the top levels
of motorsport.

After leaving the racing circuit back in 1999, Damon said it was
good to be back in the cockpit: “I don't think we’re that
intelligent to be honest as we don't feel the nerves like we should
do.

"So we get in the car and do what we use to do all those years
ago and it just comes back in a flash and off we go.

I don't think I’ve forgotten much, but I have got slower.”

As well as getting together for the banter they’re raising money
for Damon’s charity HALOW. The project is dedicated to supporting
young people with a learning disability.

McCarthy, the instigator of the idea, and the original Top Gear
‘Stig' said: “It's been such a long time - we're all experienced
to know if you're out of this game for a while you could end
up being slow and we're against these championship boys also.

“When we put a crash helmet on suddenly it starts seeping back and
you remember what it was that brought you back here.”
