Danny Spiller is refusing to write off Gillingham’s chances of an automatic promotion spot, despite slipping up against Hereford United on Saturday.

The Gills slid down to seventh after being held to a 0-0 draw against a team who began the day 19th in League 2.

Andy Hessenthaler’s men are now five points off the top three with an inferior goal difference with six games left to play.

Midfielder Spiller, pictured, said: "I still believe if we can put a really good run together, and maybe win two or three straight, hopefully it will put us into that automatic spot.

"It is still our aim and we are not going to let the Hereford result take too much wind out of our sails. We have got to make sure we now get the right result at Lincoln (on Saturday)."

Spiller was also critical of match referee Paul Tierney. Mr Tierney booked eight players, four from each side, and sent both assistant managers to the stand for making their feelings known.

"I don’t think I am speaking out of turn by saying I thought the referee killed the tempo of the game," he said. "I didn’t really hear any of their staff or our staff speaking out of turn to make it worthy of them being sent to the stand."
