Spiller had been offered an opportunity to play for American side Chicago Fire and the arrangement with Gills means he could still leave for the States in January.

The midfielder started his pro career with the Gills and made his debut in September 2001 against Bradford City.

He continued to improve and Spiller swept the board at the end-of-season awards night in 2004 after helping the Gills narrowly avoid relegation from the Championship.

Spiller made 138 appearances for the Gills before signing for Millwall in June 2007.

Injury problems there meant he played just 10 times for the South London side, and he finished last season with short stints at Wycombe and Dagenham.
